ICT Support For Schools
Modern education relies on technology more than ever before.
From online learning platforms and safeguarding systems to interactive classrooms and secure administration networks, every part of a school’s daily operation now depends on ICT systems that are stable, safe, and always available.
As an independent IT consultancy, we specialise in providing 3rd line / escalation ICT support for schools. We work with state schools, academies, private schools, nurseries, and universities to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable technology solutions.
Every school environment is different. Some have well-resourced internal IT teams, others rely on external providers, and many operate a hybrid model.
Our team acts as your third-line and escalation support partner, handling the most complex technical issues that go beyond day-to-day troubleshooting. With deep experience in networking, cloud migration, data security, and education systems, we provide dependable expertise when you need it most.
We have on hands experience with RM CC3/4, Ergo, Free2Teach, Viglen Classlink and conventional Windows based server/client networks. All major hardware vendors such as HPE, Dell, Sophos, Unifi, Cisco, Meraki and Aruba.
We understand the pressures that schools face balancing budget constraints, safeguarding compliance, data protection, and the constant demand for reliable digital access.
How we provide ICT Support for schools
Third-Line and Escalation Support
Our engineers are specialists in diagnosing and resolving complex technical problems across on-premise servers, hybrid networks, and cloud-based platforms. When your internal team encounters persistent or advanced issues, we step in to provide targeted escalation support quickly, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to teaching.
Project Implementation and Holiday Work
We support schools during key project periods such as half-terms and summer holidays, when large-scale upgrades and installations are best completed. Whether deploying new classroom devices, upgrading servers, or migrating data to cloud services, Millsit provides hands-on technical assistance and project management expertise.
Cybersecurity, Safeguarding, and Risk Mitigation
Protecting students, staff, and data is a core priority. Millsit performs detailed security audits to assess vulnerabilities and strengthen defences. Our engineers implement effective risk mitigation strategies from access control and encryption to firewall configuration and compliance with GDPR, DfE cybersecurity standards, and safeguarding policies.
Backup and Disaster Recovery Planning
Unexpected failures or cyber incidents can seriously impact operations. We create and manage robust backup and disaster recovery plans to ensure your critical data student records, assessment data, finance systems, and more is secure and recoverable with minimal downtime.
Cloud Services and Integration
Many schools are transitioning to cloud-based systems such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace for Education, or hybrid environments. Millsit supports these transitions with configuration, migration, and management services, ensuring smooth adoption and ongoing reliability.
Strategic IT Consultancy and Planning
Technology strategy is as important as daily support. Millsit works with school leaders, governors, and IT managers to plan ICT investments that align with long-term goals. We help you develop digital transformation strategies, manage budgets effectively, and future-proof your infrastructure for evolving educational needs.
Secondary School Disaster Network Cabinet
We were contacted by a secondary school whose internal IT team had been struggling for months with unreliable network connections, intermittent Wi-Fi coverage, and confusing patching layouts. The issue wasn’t faulty hardware it was the network cabinet itself. Years of ad-hoc changes, rushed term-time fixes, and legacy cabling had created a tangle of wires that made managing the network almost impossible.
When we first inspected the site, the cabinet was in a state that’s all too common in schools:
Network cables of inconsistent lengths looped and crossed each other chaotically.
Switches and patch panels were mounted haphazardly with no logical order.
Power cables and data cables were intertwined, creating unnecessary interference and safety risks.
Many ports were unlabelled, and documentation was out of date.
Engineers spent excessive time simply tracing cables before performing any maintenance.
This was a network manager’s worst nightmare and it was like a bomb waiting to blow.
We completely rebuild and rewire the cabinet over the half-term period minimising disruption to the school’s operations. Our goal was to design a clean, logically structured, and well-documented cabinet that would make future management far simpler.
Our process included:
- Audit and Assessment: We began by mapping the existing cabinet, tracing each cable, and documenting what connected to what. This created a clear understanding of the network topology.
- Decommissioning: We safely powered down and disconnected all non-critical equipment, removing redundant cabling and hardware that no longer served an active role.
- Cabinet Redesign: We planned a logical rack layout separating patch panels, switches, and servers, ensuring proper airflow and access for maintenance. Repatching and Labeling: Every cable was cut to length, routed through proper management trays, and clearly labelled according to the school’s naming convention.
- Testing and Documentation: Once the rebuild was complete, we tested every connection, verified network performance, and provided updated documentation for the school’s IT records.
